One of the two UK-based Attack Aviation Regiments that form part of 16 Air Assault Brigade. It is currently equipped with Apache helicopters. It is based at the former RAF base at Wattisham in Suffolk.

Operational Tours

Deployed on Op Telic with 16 Air Assault Brigade forming an Aviation Battlegroup (BG). This was the first (and only) time that this has been done. The BG included elements from the Royal Irish Regiment, RAF Support Helicopter Force, Royal Engineers and other attached arms.

History

Like most AAC units, 3 AAC was originally based in Germany but returned to the UK in the early 1990s.

Was renowned throughout the Corps whilst in Germany for having the highest percentage of Dope Smokers within the AAC. Frequent trips to Amsterdam were the norm and it was not unknown for half of the doors in Block 52 to be Harry Black sealed to prevent the release of pungent odours.

Could always rely on the Royal Scots from Werl to provide a good punch up on a Friday and Saturday, although said mad Jocks would inevitably join forces with the AAC when it came to shoeing in the Scalies
