Irish-born Field Marshal responsible for the formation of the Highland Militias.

Commander in Chief of His Majesty's forces, castles, forts and barracks in North Britain. Under his beady eye the Highlands were linked by some 250 miles of roads.

"If you had seen this road before it was made. You would lift up your hands and bless General Wade."

Had a special mention in the final verse of the National Anthem (although it was dropped prior to it becoming official - possibly the first flowering of PC)

"Lord, grant that Marshal Wade

May, by thy mighty aid,

Victory bring.

May he sedition hush

And, like a torrent, rush

Rebellious Scots to crush.

God save the King."
