Formed in 1985 as part of the now defunct 5 Airborne Brigade, the pathfinders are a vital component of 16 Air Assault Brigade. Based in Colchester, Essex, the platoon specialises in CTR and the location and marking of Drop Zones, Tactical Landing Zones and Helicopter Landing Sites.

Personnel were initially drawn from the patrols platoons of the three regular battalions of the Parachute Regiment - and they (paras) are still in the majority, though selection is now open to all arms within 16 AA Brigade.
