Nothing to do with Thalidomide, a baby's arm holding an apple or the reason why a long-pocketed Scot fails to get the beers in.


In a military context, a slightly slippery description for firearms that are carried by one person.


Thus grenades, pistols, rifles, LMGs etc. but not nukes.


Sub-divided by THEM (allegedly) into "longs" and "shorts", being rifles/carbines etc and pistols respectively.

For most of the rest of us, pistols are refered to as "sidearms" because they are carried at your side.
