An evening of informal entertainment, not normally involving wives/partners, which is often organised at the end of a tour or exercise as a means of winding down (or 'de-compressing' to use the modern jargon). It was in the course of smokers that such entertainments as Naked Bars became popular, when the consumption of a beer or two had led to the relaxation of the normally high standards of discipline subscribed to by members of the British Army. In bygone days, the only women likely to be at smokers were of the professional variety - usually clothing removal technicians or hookers although in the modern equal opportunities armed forces, our female colleagues are encouraged to play a full part (particularly when a Naked Bar is called).

Also known as a 'smoking concert'.
