Royal Signals personnel who work on the Ptarmigan system in the switch (funnily enough).
Normally pasty white in colour due to the lack of sun light, and have shiny arses on their trousers from the endless hours of sitting down.
Originally the nickname for the many members of the WRAC serving with the Royal Signals around the world, employed as 'Switchboard Operators'. They provided a sterling service at work, in the NAAFI and behind it after the disco/dance had finished. They always abided by their unofficial motto... "If in doubt, whip it out".
