101 Regt RA(V)
101 (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) - "The Geordie Gunners" - is a Depth Fire Regiment primarily based in and around Newcastle Upon Tyne. It was the only TA Regiment to be equipped with the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The Regiment also uses ASP, Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar (LCMR) and other Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) systems to detect and acquire targets. This is then turned into data and transmitted to the launchers so the MLRS can engage these targets.
The Regiment consists of approximately 500 TA soldiers, Regular Soldiers and civilians.
The Regiment has very strong links with the City of Newcastle and was awarded the Freedom of the City of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1980. This confers the right to march to the Town Hall in shirt sleeves on the 22nd December, with Newkie Brown bottles broken and Toon Army flags flying.
In addition, the Regiment has an official affiliation with HMS Newcastle.
