The following major events took place in 1977:
- 21 January: President Jimmy Carter pardons Vietnam War draft evaders.
- 12 March: Centenary Test between England and Australia, Australia wins by 45 runs (same margin as in 1877).
- 6 June - 9 June: Silver Jubilee celebrations, street parties, marvellous.
- 15 August: US astronomers receive the "Wow!" signal, shops report a run on tin foil.
