The following major events took place in 1980:
- 21 March: President Jimmy Carter announces that the US will boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
- 18 April: Zimbabwe gains independence from the United Kingdom; Robert Mugabe becomes Prime Minister.
- 2 September: Ford releases the Escort Mk3, a generation of boy racers rejoices.
- 8 December: John Lennon murdered in New York.
Military Events
The following military events took place in 1980:
- 24-25 April: Operation Eagle Claw, US attempt to rescue Iranian hostages goes tits up.
- 30 April: Iranian Embassy Seige begins.
- 5 May: Iranian Embassy is stormed by "Them".
- 17 June: British government announces US cruise missles will be based at RAF Greenham Common and RAF Molesworth.
- 22 September: The Iran-Iraq War brgins when Iraq decides to take a pop at Iran.
