BFT
(Abbr). Basic Fitness Test. A test of a soldier's ability to run a distance of 1.5 miles.

Consisting of 1 1/2 miles squadded (in 15 minutes), immediately followed by 1 1/2 miles best effort in under 11 1/2 minutes (way back when running in boots was de riguer) or under 10 1/2 minutes (in trainers).

Now replaced by the Basic Personal Fitness Assessment, which is a new, shiny, updated, opportunity to practice that old squaddie favourite of Breathing through your arse.
