The Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) is made up of 5 Teilstreitkraefte (arms) The Heer (Army), the Bundesmarine(the Navy), the Luftwaffe (German Air Force), the Streitkraeftebasis (similar to the General Service Corps), The Sanitaetsdienst (Medical Services) and the Feldjaeger (German Military Police). The German Government also finance part of the Deutsch-Franzoesische Brigade (Franco-Germanic Brigade) with its own insignia and command structure.
The Bundeswehr (BW) was born in 1956 some 11 years after the capitulation of the Third Reich to the Allied forces. Many of the founding troops had seen service in arms of the Third Reich's armed forces and were hardened veterans. The officer corps was outstanding and many had held staff positions in Hitler's General Staff.
