|Muzzle loading historical cannon|
Traditionally an artillery piece of no larger size than an 8 Pounder, usually using gunpowder as a propellant and muzzle loading. It is often confused with a field gun, for example the capbadge of the Royal Artillery is sometimes referred to as a cannon, however the gun depicted is a 9 pounder.
These days, the term gun is more likely to be used.
Also used to refer to quick firing weapons of 15 - 30 mm calibre such as the Rarden.
