Captain Richard Westmacott, 22 SAS
Captain Westmacott was shot dead as he led an eight-man SAS operation against the M60 gang (named after the heavy-duty, rapid firing machine gun they used) in North Belfast. The gang, which claimed the lives of at least eight members of the security forces, was forced to surrender.
Captain Westmacott, whose wife was pregnant with their first child at the time, prevented an attack on a police Land Rover at the nearby RUC base. He was posthumously awarded the Military Cross - the first to be honoured so.
