Enigma
A fiendishly cunning machine developed by the Germans in the run up to WW2.
It was an encryption machine that produced a supposedly unbreakable coded transmission.
Luckily for the free World, our boffins, with a lot of help from some plucky Poles, were cleverer than theirs and managed to break some of the codes.
Estimates suggest that the product of this code-breaking, called ULTRA, shortened the war in Europe by about 2 years. Of course, a couple of Buckets of Sunshine were about to shorten the whole war .......
