GRU

The soviet military intelligence service, GRU derives from Glavnoje Razvedyvatel'noje Upravlenije.

Being reds as well as secret squirrels meant they suspected everyone including each other. Schoolboy rivalry with the KGB resulted in a few own goals over the years.

Less numerous than their civvy brethren, their aims were directed toward more garden variety intelligence; dealing with ORBAT-type stuff concerning people and equipment in Green rather than political subversion and murdering dissidents with umbrellas.

If you like the tinfoil hat stuff, Oleg Penkovsky, a GRU officer who is credited with helping to unravel the Cuban Missile Crisis and was later shot for his trouble, was actually a double agent intent on messing with the heads of CIA and SIS types.
