Iran-Iraq War

Sometimes called the very First Gulf War, and laid the foundations for GW1 and GW2

Began 22nd September 1980, when Iraqi forces were sent to invade Iran by Saddam Hussein, and were repulsed by the Iranian Army.

Fought using WW3 weapon systems and WW1 tactics.

Finished 8 years later, after a million casualties. The last POWs were exchanged in 2003.

Net result of the war was "no change", except Saddam Hussein owed the Kuwaitis a lot of cash. The invasion of Kuwait in 1990 that triggered GW1 was partly an attempt to wriggle out of coughing up the dosh.

There is a very good wiki article about the war.
