North Africa
Once a huge rolling savannah/plain with grasslands are far as the eye could see - then man got at it and next thing you know its a desert which is slowly expanding south.
North Africa was famed during WW2 as the battleground for the Desert Rats (7th Armoured Division) and the Afrika Korps (Deutsches Afrikakorps - DAK). In addition to the main armies, the place was teeming with proto-SAS, Long Range Desert Patrol Groups, John Mills in the back of an ambulance with a kraut spy AND the generals of both sides (Rommel and Montgomery) wandering around lost. Some Italians and Spams were here but frankly as they left early (as usual) / arrived late (as usual) respectively, they can be safely discounted.
