Operation Market Garden was Montgomery's plan to seize the major river and canal bridges, all the way to the Rhein, with airborne forces and break through to them in a rapid advance from the British 30th Corps.

The Operation involved the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 1st Airborne Division in the Airborne part of the plan, Operation Market, and the British 30 Corps as the ground part, Operation Garden.

It was an ambitious plan, the bridges were taken too slowly, 30 Corps didn't penetrate the German lines as fast as they would have wished, Elite german armour units were ignored and the British 1st Airborne Division in Arnhem was left without any support for too long thus leading to the ultimate failure of the Operation.

It did achieve a lot but as the movie said ... it was a Bridge too Far.
