Ptarmigan

The British Army's Area Trunk Communications system that took over from the Bruin system in the early 1980s. It introduced automatic switching and digital traffic using the Triffid Radio system.

Conceived in the 50s, designed in the 60s, built in the 70s, introduced in the 80s, finally made to work in the 90s, what the hell are we still doing with it in the 00s, due to stay in service until the 10s.

Due to be replaced by BAE Systems' new IP-based system Falcon by 2010.
