During the Cold War years, the main use for STABs, if the balloon went up, was to rush them forward to pre-prepared positions where it was hoped that the Russian tanks and troops would be held long enough for the Regular Army to sod off to the channel ports.

Nowadays they can be found reinforcing the regular army in all theatres and highlight its inability to recruit and retain sufficient soldiers to conduct the operations their senior officers have refused to tell the politicians they are too over-stretched to do..
