The Regiment was formed in 1794 and was disbanded as a regiment in 1967, but live on today as A (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, the Royal Yeomanry and B (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, the Royal Wessex Yeomanry.

The Regiment's battle honours include South Africa and various battles from the First and Second World Wars, including the Second Battle of El Alamein, which is celebrated by B Sqn each year in honour of the part played by the Regiment, when they spearheaded the breakout during Operation Supercharge.

The Cap Badge of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry can be seen carved into the hill as part of the Fovant Badges in Wiltshire
