A varying period of service within the Armed Forces (since rationalised to ten years reserve or fifteen years regular service) that results in the eventual award of a shiny thing. Putting the time in is one thing. Keeping one's nose clean for fifteen years is quite another. A minor altercation in the local kebab shop can sully an otherwise glorious military career. Any behavior that might result in having one's collar felt by the local filth or the Badge is best avoided - or, at least, should remain undetected.
